How and why I grew up as a defender of climate decisions: Green areas in cities, as the way to reduce the impact of climate changes and the role of educating children in their protection.

My name is Olga, I am a member of the children's organization "ISKRA". This is the first children's organization in independent Ukraine (since 1991). The biggest project is the annual children's campground "Robinson". The event takes place on the Holguin Island (Olga’s island) near Kiev. Yes, we have the same name☺

Since the island is located outside the city, the nearest civilization is quiet summer cottages on the river bank. On the island there are no buildings, it is completely uninhabited. Every year we come into a tall grassy place to set up a camp for children for a month and a half.

Open space where the tents stand is surrounded on one side by a pine forest, and on the other - by the river bay, which is famous for its remarkable floodplains, meadow and river vegetation.

This year the camp is 25 years old, here, in tents, two generations of children have already grown. I also grew up on this island, getting here for the first time at 12 years old and spending summer every year. Most of the time we were barefoot in swimsuits, running through the grass. We’re in close contact with the nature of native land, studied it. This has brought me deep respect for all living things. On the island, I learned to coexist peacefully with the most annoying insects (and even snakes), and now I will definitely let out a fly or a wasp that has flown into the room, trying not to cause it any harm.

Computers or smartphones are simply don't make sense here. Recharging is limited to energy from the solar panel, and the cellular is poor. But frankly on the island you don't care about gadgets. Children and teenagers are always in motion. Water canoe trips among the lilies and colonies of herons, windsurfing, traditional festivals of Ukrainian culture, competitions and relay races, evenings with a guitar. Add to this nightly duty, help in cooking on the fire: the older guys will bring drinking water on the boats, the girls will peel the vegetables, and the children will divide by portions and hand out food.

Here we learn to live in harmony with nature. We are all parts of one. Returning to the megalopolis after the camp, you start appreciating untouched nature like never before.

As for the island itself- it is a nature reserve, and the one of the 34 islands that belong to the Dnipro Islands Landscape Park. No European capital has protected areas of similar size. These lands have never been built up and have fully conserved their original nature. The island are very important for the entire ecosystem of the Dnieper River. It is also impossible to overestimate its importance for the metropolis, with which it is adjacent and to its inhabitants.

Many species of animals and plants listed in the Red Book of Ukraine feel great here. Territories are important for the migration of birds. The bays serve as a valuable place for spawning many species of fish, among which are those that are threatened with extinction. There are ermine and otter, common beaver, stone marten, weasels, raccoon dog, water vole, muskrat. The island is a habitat for rare insects, amphibians and reptiles.

In turn, this all greatly influences the climate, for example, by creating dams, beavers transform wetlands into some of the most powerful carbon sinks on the planet.

Hazard for these islands are buildings, mining sand. Dredgers that pump sand cause a decrease in island size, create holes in the fairway of the Dnieper River. There should be a space free from mass development, which maintains ecological balance, reduced the anthropogenic impact.

Our organization is fighting to preserve this pure nature, which is very near the city, from civilization. We raise the attention of people and the media about the unlawful development of the coastal territory. And, fortunately, up to the present moment, we keep these pieces of nature untouched by people, practically on the territory of the megalopolis. After the camp, of course, we keep complete cleanliness, we teach children to do this and we clean all other garbage, which other people left.

In addition, children are future adults. Taking into account the location of the camp, you make here complete immersion in nature, in the nature of this region. It is impossible to make this in the city. But spending time on the clean air on the island, children learn to love and protect the nature, they become future lawyers of natural climate solutions. This is a contribution to eco-awareness.

The camp fully influenced on my worldview. I realized true values. During the years of my growing up, in front of my eyes, the Dnieper coastline was illegally seized with attempts to modify it to the personal needs of private individuals. But our organization repeatedly managed to attract the necessary public attention and return the coastline to public access.

Now I am an activist for the protection of nature in the city, raising issues of proper tree care in my neighborhood, sorting and recycling in the corporate sector, I am a volunteer for animal rescue.

The founding fathers of our children's organization are already elderly, so I take an active part in organizing the camp, attracting progressive lecturers, activists in order to bring up in children love of their native land, the ability to take care of it. Obviously, any changes need to start with yourself. But in climate matters, it’s even more important to start with children. We are reaping the benefits of environmental change made by our parents. Our children will pay for our mistakes, but the future of planet today already depends on the proper upbringing of children, which we have been doing successfully on Holguin Island for the 25th year in a row.

Как и почему я выросла адвокатом климатических решений. Зеленые зоны у мегаполисов, как способ смягчить изменения климата и роль воспитания детей в их защите.

Меня зовут Ольга, я член детской организации "ІСКРА". Это первая зарегистрированная детская организация в независимой Украине (с 1991 года). Самым масштабным её проектом является ежегодный детский палаточный лагерь "Робинзон". Событие проходит на Ольгином острове под Киевом. Да, его зовут также как и меня ☺

Так как остров находится за городом, ближайшая цивилизация – это тихие дачные участки на берегу реки. На самом острове нет построек, он полностью необитаем. Каждый год мы заезжаем в высокую траву, чтобы на месяц-полтора обустроить лагерь для детей.

Поляну, где стоят палатки, окружает с одной стороны сосновый лес, а с другой - залив, который славится своими замечательными поймами, луговой и речной растительностью.

В этом году лагерю 25 лет, здесь, в палатках, выросло уже два поколения детей. Я тоже выросла на этом острове, попав сюда впервые в 12 лет и проводя ежегодно каждое лето. Львиную долю времени мы находились босые в купальниках, бегая по траве. Плотно соприкасались с природой родного края, узнавали ее. Это воспитало во мне глубокое уважение ко всему живому. На острове я научилась мирно сосуществовать с самыми назойливыми насекомыми (и даже змеями), и теперь я обязательно выпущу муху или осу, залетевшую в помещение, стараясь не причинить ей никакого вреда.

Компьютеры или смартфоны здесь просто нецелесообразны. Подзарядка ограничена энергией от солнечной батареи, а связь оставляет желать лучшего. Но, откровенно говоря, на острове и не до этого. Дети и подростки все время в движении. Водные походы на байдарках среди лилий и колоний цаплей, виндсерфинг, традиционные праздники украинской культуры, соревнования и эстафеты, вечера с гитарой. Добавьте к этому ночные дежурства, помощь повару в приготовлении пищи на костре: старшие ребята привезут на лодках питьевой воды, девушки почистят овощи, а дети разделят и раздадут порции...

Здесь учат жить в гармонии с природой. Мы все частички одного целого. Возвращаясь после лагеря в мегаполис, ты как никогда ранее начинаешь ценить нетронутую природу.

Сам остров – это заповедник, и он является одним из 34 островов, которые относятся к ландшафтному парку «Днепровские острова». Ни одна европейская столица не располагает заповедными территориями подобных размеров. Эти земли никогда не застраивались и полностью сохранили свою первозданность. Остров имеет серьезное значение для всей экосистемы реки Днепр. Так же нельзя переоценить его значение для мегаполиса, с которым он соседствует и для его жителей.

Здесь прекрасно себя чувствуют немало видов животных и растений, занесенных в Красную книгу Украины. Территории важны для миграции птиц. Заливы служат ценным местом для нереста многих видов рыб, среди которых и те, которым грозит исчезновения. Встречаются горностай и выдра, распространены бобер, каменная куница, ласки, енотовидная собака, полевка водяная, ондатра. Остров - среда обитания для редких насекомых, амфибий и пресмыкающихся.

В свою очередь, это все очень влияет на климат, например, создавая плотины, бобры превращают деградировавшие водно-болотные угодья в одни из самых мощных поглотителей углерода на планете.

Опасность для этих островов представляют застройка, добыча песка для строительных нужд. Земснаряды, которые качают песок, приводят к уменьшению их размеров, создают ямы в фарватере реки Днепр. Здесь должно быть свободное от массовой застройки пространство, которое обеспечивает экологическое равновесие, смягчает антропогенную нагрузку.

Наша организация борется за сохранение этой природы без цивилизации вблизи города, нами не раз поднимался вопрос неправомерности окружающей застройки, мы привлекаем внимание медиа и общественности. И, к счастью, вплоть до настоящего момента, удается сохранять эти кусочки нетронутой людьми природы практически на территории мегаполиса. После лагеря, конечно же, оставляем за собой полную чистоту, учим этому детей и забираем весь чужой мусор.

Кроме того, дети - это будущие взрослые. Учитывая локацию лагеря, здесь происходит неизбежное полное погружение в природу, в природу местности. Она ограничена в городе. Но наблюдая ее на острове, дети учатся любить и защищать, ведь они будущие адвокаты природных климатических решений. Это и есть вклад в экосознание.

Лагерь кардинально повлиял на мое мировоззрение. Он воспитал во мне понятие истинной ценности. За годы моего взросления у меня на глазах незаконно захватывалась береговая линия Днепра с попытками

ее видоизменения под личные нужды частных лиц, но нашей организации многократно удавалось привлечь необходимое внимание общественности и вернуть береговую линию в общественный доступ.

Сейчас я активист по защите природы в городе, поднимаю вопросы правильного ухода за деревьями у себя в микрорайоне, сортировки и переработки отходов в корпоративном секторе, являюсь волонтером по спасению животных.

Отцы-основатели нашей детской организации уже пожилые люди, поэтому я принимаю активное участие в организации лагеря, привлекаю прогрессивных лекторов, активистов, чтобы прививать любовь к родному краю, умение заботиться о нем. Очевидно, что любые изменения необходимо начинать с себя. Но в вопросах климата еще важнее – начинать с детей. Мы пожинаем плоды экологических изменений, сделанных руками наших родителей. Наши дети расплатятся за наши ошибки, но будущее нашей планеты уже сегодня зависит от правильного воспитания наших детей, чем мы успешно и занимается на Ольгином острове вот уже 25-й год подряд.
